Daily Activities

A daily schedule will feature a minimum of a masterclass, group class(es) like technique/performance, and an orchestra or movement class.  Fiddling is available as an enrichment for interested string students.

Daily recitals at 1pm are an opportunity for students to showcase their polished piece (at the recommendation of the masterclass teacher).

Class Descriptions

  • MasterclassTypically 3 or 4 students of similar skill levels rotating with individual instruction from a teacher.  Students should come prepared with a polished/mastered piece to play on the first day.

  • Technique Class:  A medium-sized group of students working on technical challenges appropriate to the skill levels of the class as a whole.

  • Performance Class:  This larger group class tends to focus on polishing repertoire to be performed on an Institute concert.

  • Orchestra:  For music-reading students (usually late Book 1 and about age 7 and up).  Orchestra focuses on applying reading skills in a team/ensemble environment.

  • Movement ClassStudents not yet ready for orchestra will be placed into a movement class which is a fun environment to work on listening skills, teamwork, and other aspects of feeling music.

  • Fiddling (Enrichment) Available for violin, viola, cello students of all ages and skill levels interested in learning "non-classical" tunes and styles.

Every Child Can! (ECC!)

Every Child Can! is a one day introductory course on the Suzuki philosophy and its application to education. For parents, teachers, prospective teachers and others, this course provides an inspiring, in-depth look at the Suzuki approach to teaching and learning. For teachers, ECC serves as the first course in the Suzuki Association of the Americas Teacher Development Program.  It is recommended that interested participants in this course read Nurtured by Love by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki.

Teacher Training ECC!  & Suzuki Book 1- About Martha Shackford

Martha Shackford, SAA violin teacher and teacher trainer.  Studios in Sarasota and St. Petersburg, FL.  She has taught literally all over the world; taught music in public schools; founded a successful Suzuki School at the University of Arkansas; took her studio to Latin America spending 3 months starting the first Suzuki program in Bolivia; teaching in Institutes in several Latin American countries; conducted youth orchestras; a clinician throughout the U.S. at summer institutes and workshops.  She has trained hundreds of Suzuki violin teachers in the Suzuki approach.  Martha has de-

veloped and taught Suzuki parent courses; founded and run several Suzuki non-profits. She is still awed by the opportunity of teaching young children learn the violin or viola. It is in her interaction with a young child that she feels the most creative as a teacher, the most connected to the universe, and the most hopeful for the children of our planet.
